Wat Phanan Choeng
Temple Historic Ayutthaya temple housing a large Buddha image
In Ayutthaya province, Wat Phanan Choeng contains a large seated Buddha image and long devotional history; tourists visit to see the statue and the temple’s riverside location near Ayutthaya’s historic sites.
Wat Phanan Choeng is a Buddhist temple in Ayutthaya, Thailand, founded in 1324 and notable for its large gilded seated Buddha image. The temple sits on the eastern riverbank and predates the formal establishment of Ayutthaya as the Thai capital.
The principal attraction is the large seated Buddha, commonly called Luang Pho Tho, which measures about 19 metres in height and is housed in a riverside viharn. The complex also includes an ordination hall and a Chinese shrine that highlight the site’s long association with Chinese merchants and the multicultural character of historic Ayutthaya.
Built before the city became the Ayutthaya Kingdom’s capital, the temple has served as an active place of worship for centuries and its main image is recorded as having survived the Burmese sack of Ayutthaya in 1767. The compound has been maintained and adapted for continuing religious use since that time.
The temple stands on the eastern bank of the Chao Phraya River within Ayutthaya’s historic area, a short distance from the old city island and readily accessible from the modern town’s riverfront.
- Historic Buddha image: The main seated Buddha statue dates from 1324 and is one of the temple's defining features, having survived historic conflicts that damaged much of Ayutthaya.
- Riverside location: Located on the eastern bank of the Chao Phraya River, the temple is easy to reach from Ayutthaya's historic island district and is commonly visited on a short riverside walk.
What to See #
- Luang Pho Tho (main Buddha): The temple's central gilded seated Buddha image measures about 19 metres in height and dominates the riverside complex.
- Ubosot and Chinese shrine: The riverside ubosot and adjacent Chinese shrine are significant parts of the compound and reflect the temple's long connection with Chinese merchants and communities.

Tips for Visiting Wat Phanan Choeng #
- Arrive early (before the mid‑morning tour buses) to see Wat Phanan Choeng with far fewer crowds and better light on the large gilded seated Buddha in the main viharn.
- Combine your visit with a quick riverside walk - many visitors focus on the main hall and miss the smaller shrines and votive rooms to the sides that contain interesting offerings and local devotional art.
- If you're touring Ayutthaya by bicycle or tuk‑tuk, plan this stop before the island's main archaeological sites; many day‑trip groups visit later, so earlier arrival avoids the busiest period.
