Wat Mahathat in Ayutthaya is a ruined royal temple complex located within Ayutthaya Historical Park and dating to the early period of the Ayutthaya Kingdom. The site is noted for its central prang and numerous ruined chapels and Buddha images.
Among the best-known features is a Buddha head entwined in the roots of a fig tree, located near the temple’s remaining walls and thought to date from the period after the 18th century sack of the city. Visitors also see collapsed stupas, masked niches and scattered fragments from the temple’s original decoration.
Wat Mahathat was established as a major royal monastery in the 14th century and developed over the following centuries as Ayutthaya grew. The complex suffered heavy damage during the Burmese invasion and sack of Ayutthaya in 1767, which left many structures ruined.
The temple stands on the island of Ayutthaya, within walking distance of other principal ruins and the old city center. It is commonly visited as part of the broader Ayutthaya archaeological ensemble.

- Part of historical park: The site is part of Ayutthaya Historical Park and is routinely visited on combined tours of nearby ruined temples and the old city island.
