Wat Hanchey Travel Guide

Located in Cambodia’s Kampong Cham Province in the central east region, Wat Hanchey is a pre-Angkorian temple that dates to the 8th century, when it was originally constructed.

The temple is positioned in the hilly region of Kampong Cham, which has recently become a popular tourist area with numerous other temples and pagodas to see. Traveling to the temple is easy, with various bus services and private taxis available.

Wat Hanchey is not the most popular temple to visit, which is a bonus if you want great pictures and a more authentic visit without crowds of tourists. The site is amazing with many old structures still standing.

The beautiful and ancient temple is ornately decorated with carvings of snakes and imaginary animals. The 8th century stone structures are surprisingly well preserved with little damage or erosion.

Getting there

Wat Hanchey is positioned approximately eight miles north of Kompong Cham city, which lies on the River Mekong. Buses and taxis are available, with trips from Phnom Penh - the capital of Cambodia - taking approximately 10 hours by road. Hiring a motorcycle and self-riding is a popular choice for those capable of such a trip.
