Washington Square Park is a public municipal park in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village, centred on the Washington Arch and a large central fountain. It serves as a focal point for neighbourhood life, informal performance, chess players and university students.

The park’s paths, lawns and plazas are heavily used for people-watching, events and gatherings; the arch and fountain act as primary meeting points and photographic subjects. The space is compact-about 9.75 acres-so it is typically lively throughout the day and evening.

The park evolved from a 19th-century parade and potter’s field into a planned public square with monuments and formal landscaping; the arch and fountain have become symbolic features of Greenwich Village.

Washington Square Park is located in Lower Manhattan, bounded by Washington Square North/South and surrounded by residential streets and New York University buildings.

Washington Square Park is in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village and is easily reached on foot or by subway. The closest station is West 4th Street-Washington Square (several NYC Subway lines serving the complex), and Union Square (14th Street) is also a short walk away; from either station the park is a few minutes on foot. Many downtown bus routes also serve the surrounding streets.

• Go early in the morning for peaceful photos of the arch and fountain and to enjoy the park before lunchtime crowds, performers and chess tables concentrate around the plaza.
• Use the southern approach along Washington Square South if you want the classic fountain-and-arch perspective, and visit the northwest corner if you want a quieter spot where longtime chess players and locals gather.
• Check the park calendar or local news before visiting - the square is a frequent site for rallies, festivals and NYU events that can change access or atmosphere at short notice.
