Meatpacking District, Manhattan Square

The Meatpacking District is a neighbourhood on Manhattan’s Lower West Side in New York City that historically hosted meatpacking plants, slaughterhouses and related industries. Since the late 20th century it has been extensively redeveloped into a concentrated area of restaurants, boutiques, galleries and nightlife.

Today the district is characterised by cobblestone streets, repurposed industrial buildings and a dense cluster of dining and fashion venues, plus cultural institutions that draw day and evening visitors. The elevated High Line park runs along the former rail line and passes through the district, while the Whitney Museum and Chelsea Market sit at or near its edges.

The area was an industrial hub through much of the 19th and 20th centuries and declined in the latter 20th century before significant redevelopment of buildings and the arrival of new commercial uses. The opening of segments of the High Line from 2009 and the Whitney’s move in 2015 accelerated tourist and local visitation.

The Meatpacking District occupies Manhattan’s west side roughly between Gansevoort Street to the south and 14th Street to the north, bordered by the Hudson River to the west and Chelsea/West Village neighbourhoods to the east.

What to See#

• High Line: The High Line is an elevated linear park roughly 2.33 kilometres long that runs above the streets and passes through the Meatpacking District’s southern edge.
• Whitney Museum: The Whitney Museum of American Art relocated to a new building at Gansevoort Street in 2015, anchoring the district’s contemporary art scene and facing the High Line.
• Chelsea Market: Chelsea Market is an indoor food and retail marketplace housed in a former industrial building along the district’s eastern edge and is a major visitor draw for food and shopping.

Located on Manhattan’s west side between West 14th and Gansevoort Street. Nearest subway: A/C/E to 14th St-8th Ave (then walk west), or L to 14th St-Eighth Ave. The High Line runs along the district and provides a pedestrian approach at multiple stairs and elevators.

• Arrive in the late afternoon to see the district's nightlife transition from boutique shops to bars and restaurants.
• Walk the High Line for a bird's-eye approach and enter the district via Gansevoort Street to avoid tourist clusters around Chelsea Market.
• Try to visit during Fashion Week only if interested in people-watching; otherwise avoid peak fashion-event weekends when streets are crowded and prices spike.
