Vivara Island

Vivara is a small volcanic islet in the Bay of Naples, connected physically to the island of Procida by a narrow channel and managed as a nature reserve. The islet preserves coastal scrub, archaeological terraces and a footpath used for controlled visitor access.

The site is valued for its natural vegetation, birdlife and archaeological traces that indicate prehistoric and later human use. Access is normally arranged from Procida and visits are regulated to protect habitat and archaeological features.

Vivara lies immediately southwest of Procida within the Bay of Naples, close to Ischia and the city of Naples on the Italian mainland.

Regular passenger ferries run to Procida from Naples (Molo Beverello or Calata Porta di Massa). From Procida, local boat operators or short charter boats cross to Vivara; there is a pedestrian bridge that links Procida to the islet, but public access can be restricted due to the reserve - check local notices on Procida’s tourist office before landing.

• Arrive by ferry from Procida and time the crossing for low wind; the island is small and most paths are unpaved.
• Look for the volcanic caldera shape from the southwest: Vivara's crescent silhouette is the remnant of an old volcanic connection with Procida.
• Bring binoculars for birdlife - the islet is a protected reserve and a stopover for migratory species.
