Ischia Island

Ischia is a volcanic island in the Tyrrhenian Sea at the northern end of the Gulf of Naples, part of Italy’s Campania region. The island is notable for its volcanic geology and long history as a destination for thermal baths and seaside resorts.

Key attractions include hot springs and spa resorts distributed around the coast, seaside towns such as Ischia Porto and Forio, and historic sites like a medieval castle set on a linked islet. Visitors make use of beaches, coastal promenades and thermal spa facilities, and the island supports a local hospitality industry oriented to tourism.

Ischia’s landscape combines volcanic relief, cultivated terraces, and coastal lowlands; its economy is largely based on tourism, thermalism and small-scale agriculture. Ferries and hydrofoils provide regular connections to Naples and nearby islands.

The island lies in the Bay of Naples off Italy’s Campania coast and is one of the principal islands in the bay alongside Capri and Procida.

Ischia is reached by ferry or hydrofoil from Naples and nearby ports. From Naples there are frequent services (operators such as SNAV, Caremar and Alilauro) departing Molo Beverello and Calata Porta di Massa to Ischia Porto; hydrofoils take roughly 40-60 minutes and car ferries take longer. Ferries also run from Pozzuoli and Sorrento. Once you arrive at Ischia Porto the town and nearby attractions are walkable or served by local buses and taxis.

• Catch the first hydrofoil from Naples (Molo Beverello) or the early car ferry from Pozzuoli to arrive on Ischia Porto before day-trippers and secure parking or a central berth; ferries run more frequently in high season so plan bookings in advance.
• Use Ischia Porto as your primary arrival point if you want quick access to shops, restaurants and onward buses; for quieter beaches and villages, take the short local bus or a brief taxi ride to Forio, Sant'Angelo or Casamicciola.
• Visit the Aragonese Castle at Ischia Ponte early or late in the afternoon-many day-trippers focus on the beaches and miss the castle's layered fortifications and the causeway views back to the port.
