The castle was developed in the medieval period and served as a royal residence and defensive stronghold during Hungary’s medieval kingdom. It suffered damage in later centuries, including during Ottoman-era conflicts, and has undergone archaeological work and partial restoration to present the palace and fortification remains to the public.

How to Get to Visegrád Castle
Visegrád is about 40-50 km north of Budapest along the M2 and Route 11 following the Danube. By car it’s roughly a 45-60 minute drive from Budapest. Regional trains and buses run from Budapest’s Nyugati or Budapest-Keleti stations to Visegrád (change at Nagymaros for the ferry), and a short ferry from Nagymaros links the riverside to the castle town in high season.

- Climb to the upper terrace for unobstructed views of the bend in the Danube - best at late afternoon light.
