Why Visit Vichy?#
Centuries of spa culture are the main reason to visit Vichy, where mineral springs and Belle Époque architecture shape the town’s character. Parc des Sources and the Vichy Opera sit near a promenade lined with Art Nouveau villas, and local kitchens honor the town’s culinary link to vichyssoise and regional cheeses. Spa treatments, promenades and a calendar of concerts make it an appealing stop for rest, culture and gentle outdoor strolling.

How to Get to Vichy#
Vichy is well connected by rail (Gare de Vichy) and reachable from Clermont-Ferrand or Lyon airports with a mixture of train and road transfers. Trains from Paris and regional TER services are the most practical public options.
Clermont-Ferrand Auvergne Airport (CFE): The closest airport to Vichy (about 60-80 km). Car or taxi transfers take around 50-70 minutes; regional bus/shuttle options are limited, so many travellers route via Clermont-Ferrand train station (see below). Taxis and private transfers cost more but are the most direct option.
Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airport (LYS): A larger international hub 1.5-2 hours by car from Vichy. From Lyon you can take a TGV/TER to Clermont-Ferrand or train connections to Vichy (via Clermont or direct Intercités depending on schedule); total travel time by train is typically 1.5-3 hours depending on connection.
Train: Vichy has a SNCF station (Gare de Vichy) with Intercités and regional TER services. Paris-Vichy Intercités journeys take about 3 hours; fares typically range from €20-60 depending on advance purchase and class. Regional trains connect Vichy with Clermont-Ferrand and other Auvergne towns in under an hour.
Bus: Regional TER buses and coach services supplement rail links, and long-distance coaches (FlixBus, BlaBlaBus) sometimes serve Vichy from larger cities. Local town buses run around Vichy and its suburbs for short trips - check the local network (ALéo) for routes and tickets.
How to Get Around Vichy#
Vichy is best accessed by train (Gare de Vichy) with airport connections via Clermont-Ferrand or Lyon. Within town, local buses and walking cover short distances; taxis fill gaps for off-hour trips.
- SNCF regional & Intercités (€10-€60) - Vichy’s station has regular Intercités services to Paris and TER links across Auvergne. Trains are comfortable and often the fastest public option to major cities; book in advance for better fares on longer routes.
- Long-distance coach (€5-€30) - Coaches (FlixBus/BlaBlaBus and regional operators) connect Vichy with other French cities at lower fares but longer travel times. Buses are useful if train schedules aren’t convenient or for very low-cost travel.
- Airport transfer / shuttle (€20-€80 (depending on airport and transfer type)) - From Clermont-Ferrand or Lyon airports use a mix of train + taxi or private shuttle to reach Vichy. Direct airport shuttles are less common - plan connections via the train station for reliable links.
- Local bus (ALéo) (€1.50-€3 per ride) - Vichy’s local bus network (often branded ALéo) covers the city and nearby suburbs; tickets are cheap and useful for reaching thermal sites and residential areas. Timetables are available at the tourist office and online.
- Taxi / private car (€10-€40 depending on distance) - Taxis are convenient for airport pickups, luggage or late-night travel; fares are higher than buses but provide door-to-door service. Ride-hailing apps have limited presence - use local radio taxis.
- Walking - Vichy’s compact spa district and parks are very walkable; most historic and thermal attractions are reachable on foot. Walking is the best way to enjoy the town’s arcades and promenades.
