How to Get to Vani
Vani is best reached via Kutaisi (Kutaisi International Airport) or by road from Georgia's larger hubs such as Tbilisi. Most international flights use Kutaisi or Tbilisi; from either city you continue by regional train, coach or marshrutka to reach Vani and surrounding villages.
Kutaisi International Airport (KUT): The closest international airport for western Georgia is Kutaisi. From Kutaisi you can reach Kutaisi city by shuttle minibus or taxi; shuttles into town typically cost around 5-10 GEL and take about 25-40 minutes, taxis about 25-40 GEL and 20-30 minutes. From Kutaisi central bus station there are marshrutkas (minibuses) that run to Vani; those local minibuses are low-cost (around 1-3 GEL) and take roughly 40-60 minutes depending on stops.
Tbilisi International Airport (TBS): For more flight options use Tbilisi. From Tbilisi airport a direct taxi to Kutaisi is long and expensive; common routing is to take a domestic flight or intercity bus/train to Kutaisi, or a long-distance taxi. Intercity buses and trains connect Tbilisi and Kutaisi (see train/bus card) - Tbilisi-Kutaisi bus journeys are commonly 3.5-4.5 hours and regional trains are similar in duration.
Train: Georgia’s national rail operator runs services between major cities. The main rail access for Vani is via Kutaisi station (Kutaisi I or Kutaisi II depending on service) - you would change at Kutaisi and continue by local bus or taxi to Vani. Intercity trains (Tbilisi-Kutaisi) typically take about 4-5 hours and fares vary by train class; regional short hops around Imereti are inexpensive but slower.
Bus / Marshrutka: Marshrutkas (shared minibuses) are the most direct local option to Vani from nearby towns. There are regular marshrutkas from Kutaisi central bus station to Vani (ticket prices typically around 1-3 GEL) and longer-distance coaches from Tbilisi to Kutaisi cost more (roughly 15-25 GEL) and take about 3.5-4.5 hours. Taxis are widely available for door-to-door transfers if you need more convenience.
How to Get Around Vani #
Vani is compact and easy to explore on foot; most sights (town center, cafés, the archaeological area) are within short walking distance. For longer hops, marshrutka (shared minibuses) and regional buses link Vani with nearby towns like Kutaisi and Baghdati; schedules can be sparse outside peak hours, so plan ahead. Taxis are available but not plentiful; expect to pay modest local fares in Georgian lari. Roads outside town are rural, so a rented car gives the most flexibility for exploring surrounding wineries and archaeological sites.
