The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam houses the largest collection of works by Vincent van Gogh and is a major center for study of the artist’s life and art. The museum opened in 1973 and presents paintings, drawings and personal letters in a sequence that traces his development.

Familiar paintings such as several versions of Sunflowers, Almond Blossom and numerous self-portraits, supported by letters that document Van Gogh’s intentions and methods. The collection is displayed in the original Rietveld building with an adjacent modern wing for temporary exhibitions.

The museum was established by Dutch private foundations and the Van Gogh family legacy to preserve and present the artist’s work; it also conducts research and conservation related to Van Gogh and his circle.

Located on Museumplein in Amsterdam, the museum sits close to the Rijksmuseum and Stedelijk Museum and is accessible by tram and public transport from the city centre.

What to See#

• Rietveld building (main collection): The original Rietveld-designed main building housing the permanent collection of paintings, drawings and letters by Vincent van Gogh, arranged chronologically to show his development.
• Kurokawa wing: A modern wing added in 1999 designed by Kisho Kurokawa that contains larger temporary exhibition spaces and visitor facilities alongside additional display galleries.

Reach the Van Gogh Museum by taking trams 2, 5 or 12 to the Museumplein/Rijksmuseum stop and walking 2-5 minutes across Museumplein to the museum entrance. From Amsterdam Centraal it’s a 20-25 minute walk or a short tram ride; from Schiphol airport it’s about 17-20 km by car (~20-30 minutes depending on traffic).

• Book a timed ticket in advance (entry slots are enforced) and aim for the first entry of the day or a late afternoon slot to avoid the busiest periods around the most famous canvases.
• Start on the top floors and work downward-fewer people begin there, so you'll see lesser-known sketches and letters in relative quiet before joining the crowd at the iconic paintings.
• If your schedule is flexible, visit on weekdays outside school holidays; the museum fills quickly during Amsterdam's high season and weekend mornings.
