Museumplein is a large public square and park in Amsterdam’s museum quarter, surrounded by several of the Netherlands’ major cultural institutions. It functions as an urban green space and event site in the southern part of the city.

The square is bordered by the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, and the Stedelijk Museum, and the Concertgebouw lies on its southern edge. The open lawn and paved areas host an outdoor ice rink in winter, festivals, concerts and temporary exhibitions.

The plaza was developed to serve the museums built around it from the late 19th century onward and remains the principal pedestrian space connecting these institutions. It lies in the Oud-Zuid neighborhood, within walking distance of the city center and tram connections.

Museumplein is in central Amsterdam next to the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum. From Amsterdam Centraal it is about 3 km (roughly a 20-30 minute walk); you can take GVB tram lines 2 or 5 to the Van Baerlestraat/Museumplein area for a one‑ticket transfer and a short walk from the tram stop.

• Go early in the morning or late in the afternoon on weekdays for the clearest photos and far fewer tour groups around the museums.
• If you plan to enter the Rijksmuseum or Van Gogh Museum, buy timed tickets in advance-these two institutions enforce entry times and are the main sources of crowding on the square.
• Use the open lawn and the quieter edges of the square to sit or picnic; check local listings for occasional outdoor concerts or markets that can make the plaza unusually busy on weekends.
