Valley of Flowers National Park is a high-elevation protected area in Uttarakhand in the Indian Himalaya, celebrated for extensive alpine meadows that bloom with endemic and rare flowering plants. It is part of a larger UNESCO World Heritage listing together with the Nanda Devi Protected Area.

The main attraction is the valley’s seasonal displays of hundreds of alpine species across meadows and slopes, often accessed by trekkers who follow a mountain trail from the roadhead to the valley. Scenic streams, waterfalls and glacial-fed terrain run through the park and create varied plant habitats.

The park was established in the late 20th century for conservation of its alpine flora and wildlife and later inscribed as a World Heritage site in conjunction with Nanda Devi. Management focuses on protecting fragile high-altitude ecosystems while permitting regulated trekking.

Geographically it lies in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand in the western Himalaya; the valley is reached from lower-elevation towns and the trekking base settlement of Ghangaria.

  • Best time to visit: Peak display of alpine flowering occurs in the monsoon window, typically July to early September, when meadows are richest in species and colour.
  • Conservation status: Part of a UNESCO World Heritage site together with the adjacent Nanda Devi Protected Area, with entry regulated by park authorities and local permits required for trekking.
