About Vajdahunyad Castle

Vajdahunyad Castle is a late 19th century historicist complex in Budapest’s City Park, erected for the 1896 Millennial Exhibition. It reproduces elements of several historic Hungarian architectural styles in a single ensemble.

The castle contains exhibition spaces and museums and sits beside the park’s boating lake, with picturesque facades that attract many visitors for photography and short visits. Architectural elements reference medieval Transylvanian and other Hungarian historic buildings.

Designed by Igne1c Alpe1r for the exhibition, the original structure was temporary and later reconstructed in stone in the early 20th century to make it permanent. Since then it has housed museum collections and been maintained as a Budapest landmark.

It stands in the central City Park (Városliget) of Budapest, within walking distance of major city-center attractions and public transport connections.

How to Get to Vajdahunyad Castle

Vajdahunyad Castle sits inside Budapest’s City Park (Városliget) next to Hősök tere (Heroes’ Square). The easiest public-transit route is Budapest Metro line M1 (the yellow line) to the Hősök tere stop; the castle is a 2-5 minute walk from that station. By car it is in the central City Park area a short drive from downtown Budapest.

  • Arrive early in the morning to photograph the ornate façades with fewer people in Budapest's City Park and to enjoy a quieter interior visit of the castle.
  • Approach the castle from the Széchenyi Baths/City Park side to combine your visit with the baths and park attractions and to avoid the busiest postcard viewpoints.
  • Don't just photograph the exterior-allow time to visit the castle's interior exhibits (the Hungarian Agricultural Museum is housed here), which many visitors skip while only viewing the outer architecture.
