Utica, Tunisia
Archaeological Site Ancient Phoenician and Roman archaeological site
Near Bizerte, the Phoenician and later Roman site Utica features archaeological ruins, ancient city walls and mosaic fragments; visitors explore excavations and nearby museums to trace North Africa’s classical and Punic history.
Utica is an ancient settlement on the northeastern coast of Tunisia with origins in the Phoenician era and later development under Roman rule. It is among the earliest known North African trading settlements established by seafarers from the Levant.
Remains at the site include traces of urban layout, public buildings, baths and funerary monuments, and the location is visited for its archaeological interest rather than for large, intact monuments. The town played a regional role in antiquity as a trading and port settlement.
Founded by Phoenician colonists in the first millennium BCE, Utica became integrated into Roman administration in the centuries after Rome expanded in North Africa. Over time it was overshadowed by larger neighbouring cities and declined in late antiquity and the medieval period.
The ruins lie on Tunisia’s northeastern littoral in Bizerte Governorate, near the Gulf of Tunis and the modern coastal towns of the region. The site is accessible from regional roads and is part of the broader landscape of ancient Phoenician and Roman settlements along Tunisia’s north coast.
- Founding era: Founded by Phoenician settlers in the first millennium BCE and later occupied and Romanised during the Republic and Imperial periods.
- Archaeology: Surviving remains include public and funerary architecture and mosaics, but the site is fragmentary compared with larger Roman cities like nearby Carthage.
