Ussangoda
National Park Coastal plain with distinctive red soil in Sri Lanka
A coastal plateau and beach in Southern Sri Lanka, Ussangoda is known for red‑stained soil, ocean views and shoreline walks popular at sunset.
Ussangoda is a coastal rocky plateau and protected coastal area on Sri Lanka’s southern coast in Hambantota District, known for its distinctive reddish soil and low scrubland. It is a compact landscape of flat, eroded rock and sparse vegetation directly facing the Indian Ocean.
A mix of rocky escarpment, narrow beach strips and wind-swept grassland provides open sea views and low cliffs that are used as informal viewpoints; the area is also associated with local folklore claiming meteorite origins for the red soil. The terrain is short and walkable and is commonly visited for short coastal walks and sunsets.
Local archaeological finds and burial mounds have been recorded in the broader region, and the site is managed for conservation and public access by Sri Lankan authorities.
Ussangoda sits on the southern shoreline of Sri Lanka in Hambantota District, facing the Indian Ocean and reachable by road from nearby coastal communities in Southern Province.
- Best time to visit: Best light for photography and sea views is late afternoon and at sunset, when the exposed plateau and red soil show strongest contrast against the ocean.
- Visitor note: The site is small, exposed and largely free of shade, so bring water and sun protection when walking on the plateau.
