How to Get to Urk#
Urk is best reached by road or by combining train to nearby stations (Lelystad or Kampen) with a regional bus. The town has no railway station, so buses or a short drive from Lelystad/Swifterbant are the common last-mile choices.
Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS): The main international airport for reaching Urk. By car it takes roughly 1-1.5 hours depending on traffic (≈70-90 km); public transport requires a combination of train and bus (see below).
Eindhoven Airport (EIN): An alternative for some European connections, but not notably closer in public-transport time to Urk than Schiphol.
Train: Urk has no railway station. The closest major railheads are Lelystad Centrum and Kampen (station: Kampen Zuid or Kampen), both of which have regular NS services.
Bus: From Lelystad or Kampen you can take regional buses (Connexxion/Keolis) to Urk-journeys from Lelystad to Urk take about 30-45 minutes by bus; single fares are typically in the €3-6 range. Plan connections carefully as some services are hourly.
How to Get Around Urk#
Because Urk has no train station, visitors usually travel by train to Lelystad or Kampen and transfer by bus, or drive directly. Local buses and walking cover most local mobility.
- Train (to Lelystad / Kampen) (€5-20 (to nearby station)) - Take NS trains to the nearest railheads-Lelystad Centrum or Kampen-and transfer to local buses for Urk. Trains are frequent on Dutch intercity and regional lines; check connections to minimize waiting time for the bus leg.
- Bus (regional) (€3-6) - Regional buses operated by Connexxion or Keolis link Lelystad, Kampen and surrounding towns with Urk. Buses are the main public option into Urk and typically take 30-45 minutes from Lelystad with fares around €3-6.
- Car / Driving (€35-60/day) - Driving is the most flexible way to reach Urk-good road connections and parking in town make a rental car convenient, especially if you plan to explore Flevoland or nearby IJsselmeer coastline.
- Taxi / Transfer (€30-80) - Taxis and private transfers can be booked from Lelystad or Amsterdam for direct door-to-door service-handy if arriving with luggage or outside bus hours. Expect higher cost than the bus but greater convenience.
- Bicycle (€0-15/day) - If you’re staying locally (for example in Lemmer or on the Flevoland side), cycling to Urk is a pleasant option; the region is flat and has good cycling infrastructure. For longer distances, combine bike + train/bus.
- Walking - Urk’s fishery town centre is compact and best explored on foot; the harbour, markets and old streets are within easy walking distance.
