Veluwemeer formed in the course of mid-20th-century engineering works connected with the creation of Flevoland and the re-configuration of the Zuiderzee into inland lakes and polders. Its presence reflects the Netherlands’ long-term programme of land reclamation and water control.
The lake lies between the province of Flevoland and the Veluwe area of Gelderland, with towns such as Harderwijk and Lelystad on or near its shores.
