Southeast England & London
Short daylight and frequent drizzle mark December, but festive lights and seasonal markets make the southeast inviting despite the weather. Occasional cold snaps bring freezing fog or light snow to higher ground in the Chilterns and North Downs, briefly turning country lanes slippery. If you plan winter walks along the coast or in the Surrey Hills, wear a waterproof jacket, hat and thermal layer; expect public transport to be busy around holidays.
Southwest England (Cornwall, Devon, Somerset)
December is mild compared with much of the UK but very changeable: sunny, sheltered days sit alongside ferocious Atlantic storms that close ferries and bring spray to cliff-top paths. Festive markets and cosy pubs in towns such as Padstow and Salcombe feel especially atmospheric when wind and rain force you indoors. Bring thermal layers, waterproofs and an attitude for brisk bracing walks when the weather allows.
Wales & the Marches (Snowdonia, Brecon Beacons, Cardiff)
December is chilly and damp in the lowlands with occasional stormy spells on the coast; Snowdonia often has settled snow on its summits, making it a draw for experienced winter climbers. Seasonal events in Cardiff and Conwy create lively centres to shelter from the weather; expect short daylight hours and frequent drizzle. If planning mountain days, carry winter kit and check avalanche and mountain reports.
Northern England (Lake District, Yorkshire Dales, Northumberland)
December is variable: flat, dreary periods with drizzle alternate with bright, cold snaps that can deposit showery snow on fells and moorland. Christmas markets in York and Newcastle are atmospheric even in drizzle, but be prepared for slippery rural lanes when driving to remote cottages. For mountain travel bring winter kit and check local mountain rescue or weather advisories before setting out.
Scotland (Lowlands, Highlands & Islands combined)
December is often a mixture of crisp, clear spells and ferocious Atlantic storms that bring heavy rain and snow to western mountains and blustery conditions through city streets. Christmas markets in Edinburgh are atmospheric but cold; hill days require winter kit and local avalanche information if venturing into the high mountains. For island travel have contingency plans and check ferry notices before departure.
Northern Ireland
December is cold, damp and often windy with short daylight; occasional frosts and patchy snow may appear in the Mournes and Sperrins, making hill access more challenging. Coastal storminess can close small harbours and beaches temporarily, but winter festivals and cosy pubs make cities welcoming. Pack warm, waterproof clothing and plan for possible disruptions to rural transport.
