Southeast England & London

The bluebell carpets and cherry trees of April are a major draw across Surrey, Kent and London parks, and warm, sunny interludes are common between showery spells. Temperatures often climb into the mid-teens; daytime walks in Richmond Park or along the South Downs are very pleasant, though gusty easterlies can make the coast feel cooler. Bank holiday weekends are busy; pack a waterproof layer and a light jumper for chilly mornings and evenings.

Southwest England (Cornwall, Devon, Somerset)

April brings an explosion of spring flowers: the bulb fields around Penzance and the subtropical gardens of St Michael’s Mount look at their best on fair days, and temperatures climb into comfortable teens. However, the weather can flip from sun to heavy rain within hours on the exposed headlands, so a windproof jacket and waterproof trousers are handy for long coastal walks. The county shows its best for photographers and fewer crowds than summer.

Wales & the Marches (Snowdonia, Brecon Beacons, Cardiff)

By April the lowlands and coastal areas warm appreciably and bluebell woods in Pembrokeshire and the Wye Valley begin to carpet the ground, which makes for beautiful late-spring hikes. The mountains can shed their snow cover, but sudden weather changes remain a feature, so hillwalkers should carry waterproofs and an OS map. Wildlife is active - spring seabird and seal watching is excellent along the Llŷn and Pembrokeshire coasts.

Northern England (Lake District, Yorkshire Dales, Northumberland)

April commonly gives a string of fine days across Yorkshire and Northumberland, with calm, clear weather ideal for walking Hadrian’s Wall or coastal cliffs near Whitby and Scarborough. However, mountain summits in the Lakes can still receive snow showers and nights remain cold. Shoulder-season advantages include fewer crowds and lower accommodation rates, but bring a warm mid-layer and waterproofs for sudden showers.

Scotland (Lowlands, Highlands & Islands combined)

April frequently produces striking spring contrasts - snow-capped peaks in the Highlands but mild sunshine in the Borders and on the east coast where Edinburgh’s gardens awaken. Storms across the Atlantic can still bring wet and windy weather to Skye and the Outer Hebrides, producing dramatic surf. Shoulder-season travel benefits from fewer tourists, but island ferry timetables remain subject to weather.

Northern Ireland

April is often one of the better months for touring Northern Ireland: temperatures become milder and the countryside looks fresh with spring growth around Glenariff and the Causeway Coastal Route. Rain showers still occur but sunny breaks make coastal drives rewarding; the cliffs and sea stacks feel especially dramatic in clearer weather. Pack waterproofs and a fleece, and expect quieter attractions than in peak summer.
