Taxes, Banking and Money in the UAE for Digital Nomads

Why the UAE has no personal income tax, tax residency certificates, what your home country may still tax, costs by emirate, rent cheques, and opening a UAE bank account.

The UAE’s biggest draw for many remote workers is tax: there is no personal income tax. That doesn’t automatically end your tax obligations at home, though. This page explains the position as of October 2026. It is a general guide, not tax advice.

No Personal Income Tax#

The UAE doesn’t tax individuals’ employment income, freelance income or investment income. There is a 9% corporate tax on business profits above AED 375,000 and 5% VAT on most goods and services.

Tax Residency Certificates#

Individuals who spend 183 days or more in the UAE in a 12-month period (or 90 days with a residence permit and a permanent home or job there) can apply for a UAE tax residency certificate. This can help show you are tax resident in the UAE rather than elsewhere.

Your Home Country May Still Tax You#

Moving to the UAE doesn’t end tax obligations in countries that tax by citizenship (such as the US) or where you remain tax resident under their rules. Get advice before assuming your income is tax-free.

What It Costs by Base#

These are ballpark monthly costs for one person in a furnished apartment, eating out often, with a coworking desk and a social life.

Base Lean Comfortable Premium
Dubai $2,800 $4,000 $6,000
Abu Dhabi $2,500 $3,600 $5,500
Sharjah, Ras al-Khaimah $1,800 $2,300 to $3,000 $4,000+

Rent and Payments#

Long leases are often paid in one to four post-dated cheques a year, plus a deposit and agency fee; monthly furnished rentals cost more but avoid this. Cards and contactless payments are accepted almost everywhere.

Opening a UAE Bank Account#

You need an Emirates ID, which the remote work visa provides. Banks such as Emirates NBD, Mashreq, ADCB and the digital bank Wio serve residents; some require minimum balances.
