About Uffizi#
The Uffizi is a major art museum in central Florence housed in a 16th-century palace originally designed by Giorgio Vasari for Cosimo I de’ Medici. Its collection is one of the most important of the Italian Renaissance, assembled from Medici holdings and later acquisitions.
Key highlights include masterworks by Botticelli, Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael and Caravaggio, with particular attention to Botticelli’s Birth of Venus and Primavera. Galleries are arranged chronologically and by school, concentrating Renaissance painting in contiguous rooms.
The palace was constructed in the mid-16th century as magistrate offices and was gradually transformed into a public gallery in the 18th century under the Lorraine Grand Dukes. The complex has been expanded and conserved over subsequent centuries to display the collection to the public.
The Uffizi runs along the River Arno beside Piazza della Signoria in Florence’s historic centre, within easy walking distance of the Duomo and Ponte Vecchio.
- Tickets and crowds: Timed tickets and advance booking are strongly recommended, especially in high season, as key rooms become very crowded during midday hours.
- Best viewpoints: Upper floor windows offer clear views down the Arno and across to the Ponte Vecchio and are useful photo vantage points when interior galleries are busy.
What to See#
- The Tribune: An octagonal, jewel-like gallery created in the late 16th century to display the Medici family’s prized antiquities and artworks; it was an early museum space within the palace complex.
- Botticelli galleries: The rooms housing Sandro Botticelli’s works, including Birth of Venus and Primavera, arranged in contiguous galleries on the second floor that are major visitor draws.
- Vasari Corridor: The elevated enclosed passageway commissioned in 1565 connecting the Uffizi with the Pitti Palace across the River Arno; it is occasionally opened for special tours and exhibitions.
How to Get to Uffizi#
From Firenze Santa Maria Novella (SMN) station the Uffizi is an easy 10-15 minute walk (about 800-1,000 m) east: head toward Piazza della Repubblica, continue down Via dei Calzaiuoli to Piazza della Signoria (the Uffizi faces the square and the Arno). Florence has no metro; most city buses stop near Santa Maria Novella if you prefer not to walk.
Tips for Visiting Uffizi#
- Book a timed-entry ticket well in advance and arrive right at opening-this lets you see the Botticelli and Michelangelo rooms before they become overcrowded.
- Head straight to the most famous rooms on the first half of your visit and then explore the upper and side galleries later; the lesser-seen drawings, prints and smaller portraits tend to be much quieter.
- Use the reserved/ticket-holder entrance to skip the long ticket lines in Piazza della Signoria and consider a mid-week visit outside school holidays to avoid peak crowds.
Best Time to Visit Uffizi#
Visit in spring or early autumn for milder weather and shorter queues at this popular gallery.
