Ponte Vecchio is a medieval stone bridge over the Arno River in Florence noted for its line of shops built along the span. The bridge retains its historic character with narrow shopfronts and a covered passage across the river.

The structure rests on a series of arches that carry the continuous row of small shops; today the shops are mainly jewellers, goldsmiths and tourist-oriented trades. The bridge’s central location connects the historic centre with the Oltrarno district.

The present bridge dates to the medieval period and has been rebuilt and maintained over centuries while preserving its commercial function. It is one of Florence’s most photographed landmarks.

Ponte Vecchio crosses the Arno in central Florence and links the Piazza della Signoria area with the Oltrarno on the river’s south bank.

• Shops and covered walkway: The central covered walkway across the bridge contains small shops historically occupied by butchers and now dominated by jewelers and goldsmiths.
• Arches and structure: Three main segmental arches span the Arno River and support the continuous row of shops and pedestrian passage across the bridge.

Ponte Vecchio crosses the Arno in Florence’s historic centre. It is an easy walk from Santa Maria Novella train station (approximately 10-15 minutes, about 1 km) via Via de’ Tornabuoni and the shopping streets, or from Piazza della Signoria in a few minutes on foot. The bridge is pedestrianised and reachable on foot from most central bus stops and hotels; local ATAF buses also serve nearby stops.

• Go at sunrise for quiet photos and to watch the shops unlock - the bridge becomes packed by mid‑morning and usually stays that way until late evening.
• Step back to view Ponte Vecchio from nearby vantage points such as Ponte Santa Trinita or the riverbank for a better composition than a straight‑on bridge shot while avoiding the busiest pedestrian flow on the bridge itself.
• Be aware the Vasari Corridor runs above the shops and is not generally open to the public except on special guided tours; check for those limited openings if you want an uncommon perspective.
