Uea
Island Village on Rotuma Island, Fiji
Uea is the principal island of the Rotuma Group, a Fijian dependency in the South Pacific, and is the main inhabited island of that group. It is the cultural and population center for the Rotuman people.
The island contains traditional villages, community facilities and fringing coral reefs that support fishing and subsistence agriculture. Visitors encounter local Rotuman customs, church buildings and residential settlements rather than tourist infrastructure.
Uea has been inhabited by the Rotuman people for many centuries and is the focal point of Rotuman language and culture. It has maintained distinct cultural traditions within the broader political framework of the Republic of Fiji.
Geographically the island sits in the Pacific north of Fiji’s main islands, forming the Rotuma Group. It is remote from Fiji’s main population centers and is reached by infrequent sea or air links.
- Role: Serves as the principal inhabited island of the Rotuma Group and as the cultural and population centre for Rotuman people.
