Oudong Travel Guide
City City in Kampong Thom with rural charm
Perched on a hill west of Phnom Penh, Oudong draws pilgrims and photographers to its rows of stupas and shaded steps; climbers catch the river plain views, monks chant at dawn and small vendors sell grilled bananas.
Why Visit Oudong? #
Once Cambodia’s royal capital, Oudong attracts visitors for its hilltop stupas, royal necropolis and panoramic countryside views. Clusters of Buddhist monuments atop the mountain draw pilgrims during festivals like Pchum Ben, and shaded paths lead between large Buddha images and memorial stupas. Its historical weight and religious rituals offer a quieter, more contemplative complement to Cambodia’s better-known temple sites.

How to Get to Oudong
Oudong (Udong) is a short road journey from Phnom Penh and is normally visited as a day trip by car, taxi or organised tour. There is no direct rail service; road transport is the practical option.
Phnom Penh International Airport (PNH): Phnom Penh is the nearest international airport to Oudong (the former royal capital). From Phnom Penh it is a road journey of roughly 45-75 minutes depending on traffic and the exact site accessed; taxis and private drivers are common for the transfer.
Siem Reap / local airfields: These are farther away and require a long onward road transfer to Oudong.
Train: Cambodia’s passenger rail network is limited and does not serve Oudong directly.
Bus / tuk‑tuk / taxi: Regular provincial buses and private taxis run from Phnom Penh to Oudong; tuk‑tuks and motorbike taxis are useful for short local transfers around the hill and temple sites. Journey time from Phnom Penh is typically under 90 minutes by road.
How to Get Around Oudong #
Oudong (Udong) is primarily a historic site rather than a transport hub; visitors typically arrive by tuk-tuk, motorcycle taxi or private car from Phnom Penh and then explore the site on foot. The temples and stupas are spread across a low ridge, so comfortable shoes are useful. Public transport options are limited; arrange onward travel back to Phnom Penh or nearby towns in advance, and carry water and sun protection for site walks.

If you’re seeking bars or live music, Phnom Penh is the place to go rather than Oudong.
Shopping in Oudong #
Shopping around Oudong is minimal and focused on small roadside stalls selling snacks, water and modest souvenirs near the main parking and viewing areas. For significant shopping or handicrafts, return to Phnom Penh where markets and shops are far more extensive. Expect few formal shops at the site itself; vendors tend to be seasonal and event-driven.
