Kompong Luong

Kompong Luong is one of the largest floating villages on Cambodia’s Tonle Sap Lake, consisting of extensive clusters of floating and stilted houses, shops, and community facilities. The settlement expands and contracts with the lake’s annual flood pulse, and its economy is closely tied to fishing and aquaculture.

The village comprises residential areas, shops and markets, schools, and religious structures adapted to variable water levels, with walkways and boats as the primary means of movement. Visitors commonly travel by boat to observe the floating market, fish farms, and daily life on the water.

The community developed in response to the Tonle Sap’s extreme seasonal changes, with houses built to float or sit on tall stilts during high water and to stand on exposed ground in the dry season. Local livelihoods center on fishing, fish processing, and small-scale commerce tied to the lake.

Kompong Luong sits on Tonle Sap Lake in central Cambodia; the village is accessed by boat from lakeside landing points and is commonly visited on day trips from Siem Reap and nearby lakeshore towns.

• Seasonal accessibility: Boat access is required to reach the village and the community is much more extensive and mobile during the wet season when water levels rise; low-season visits show more exposed ground and stilted houses.
