Tsarevets (fortress)

Tsarevets is a medieval fortress on a hill above the town of Veliko Tarnovo that served as the primary stronghold and royal citadel of the Second Bulgarian Empire in the 12th to 14th centuries. The site is one of Bulgaria’s best-known medieval monuments.

Within the fortress are defensive walls, ruined towers and the foundations and partial remains of the Patriarchal Cathedral and other ecclesiastical and residential buildings. Paths lead around the hill and to viewpoints over the town and the Yantra River.

The fortress rose to prominence as the seat of Bulgarian rulers during the medieval period and was captured and largely destroyed at the end of the 14th century during the Ottoman conquest. Archaeological work and reconstructions in the 20th century have stabilized and interpreted the ruins for visitors.

Tsarevets occupies a dominant rocky hill above Veliko Tarnovo and is accessible on foot from the historic town centre, which lies along the bending course of the Yantra River.
