Nicopolis ad Istrum Archaeological Site

Nicopolis ad Istrum is the ruins of a Roman and early Byzantine city in northern central Bulgaria, near Veliko Tarnovo, founded in the early 2nd century CE. The site preserves the remains of a planned Roman town with public buildings and defensive works.

Surviving features include the street grid and forum of the Roman urban plan, public and religious buildings such as basilicas, and sections of the defensive walls. The exposed foundations, columns and masonry give a clear impression of the town’s size and layout.

Founded by the Romans in the early 2nd century CE as a regional centre after military campaigns in the area, the city later continued into the Byzantine period before declining in the Middle Ages. Archaeological excavations over the 20th and 21st centuries have documented its urban fabric and changing use over time.

The ruins lie in Veliko Tarnovo Province in north-central Bulgaria, set in open countryside near small modern villages that provide access to the archaeological park.

• Basilicas and churches: Several early Christian and Byzantine churches and basilicas have been excavated, showing the city’s later religious architecture and reuse of Roman structures.
• Baths, gates and residential areas: Remains of bath complexes, city gates and residential quarters show the civic and daily-life structures of the Roman and later periods.

Nicopolis ad Istrum is near the town of Veliko Tarnovo in northern Bulgaria. From Veliko Tarnovo it is roughly a 20-30 minute drive northeast; local roads are rural and a car is the most convenient option.

• Wear sturdy shoes - the archaeological site covers an exposed plateau with loose stones.
• Bring sun protection in summer; there is little shade among the ruins.
• Read up on Emperor Trajan and the Roman northward expansions beforehand - interpretive signs are helpful but sparse.
