Holy Forty Martyrs Church, Veliko Tarnovo Church

The Church of the Holy Forty Martyrs is a medieval Bulgarian Orthodox church in Veliko Tarnovo, constructed in 1230 during the rule of Tsar Ivan Asen II. It is noted for its historical role and burial monuments associated with the Second Bulgarian Empire.

Interior features include medieval masonry, fresco fragments and a set of royal tombs that were discovered within the church; these tombs are associated with prominent rulers of the period. The building is an important example of ecclesiastical architecture from the 13th century in Bulgaria.

The church was founded during the reign of Ivan Asen II and formed part of the religious and dynastic landscape of medieval Tarnovo, which served as the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire. Over the centuries it has been conserved and studied for its archaeological and historical significance.

It stands on a hill in central Veliko Tarnovo, close to the Tsarevets fortress and within the city’s historic core, making it accessible on foot from the main tourist sites.

From Veliko Tarnovo’s central bus and train area it’s an easy 10-15 minute walk through the pedestrian/old-town streets; taxis are readily available in the city. If driving from Sofia, expect roughly 2.5-3 hours by road (about 220 km) to Veliko Tarnovo, then follow signs to the old town.
