How to Get to Trévani#
Trévani (Koungou) is a locality on Mayotte’s Grande-Terre. The island’s international airport is Dzaoudzi-Pamandzi (DZA) on Petite-Terre; onward travel is by road using taxis, taxi-brousse or rental car-no rail links exist.
Dzaoudzi-Pamandzi International Airport (DZA): The island’s main airport is on Petite-Terre (Pamanzi). From DZA reach Trévani (Koungou area on Grande-Terre) by road via Mamoudzou - airport-to-Mamoudzou taxis take about 20-30 minutes and usually cost around €20-€35; onward taxi-brousse or local taxi from Mamoudzou to Koungou villages is typically 15-30 minutes more.
Regional connections (Reunion / Comoros): Some visitors connect through regional hubs such as Reunion (RUN) or the Comoros depending on schedules; these require international flight planning and onward local road transfers to reach Koungou.
Taxi-brousse / Shared minibus: Mayotte has no railway. Public transport relies on shared taxis (taxi-brousse) and a limited bus network. From Mamoudzou or Dembeni, shared taxis connect to Koungou and its neighborhoods; journeys are brief but depend on departure times and capacity.
Taxi / Private car: Taxis from Mamoudzou or the airport are the fastest and most direct option to Koungou/Trévani. Renting a car is also practical for exploring Grande-Terre if you plan multiple village stops.
How to Get Around Trévani#
There is no rail service-arrivals use Dzaoudzi-Pamandzi (DZA) then travel by taxi, taxi-brousse or rental car to Koungou/Trévani. Taxis are fastest; shared taxis are cheapest.
- Taxis (airport ↔ Mamoudzou / Koungou) (€20-€40) - Taxis offer direct, dependable transfers from DZA to Mamoudzou and Koungou neighbourhoods. They’re the easiest door-to-door option-book in advance when possible, especially for early arrivals.
- Shared taxis / Taxi-brousse (a few €) - Shared taxi-brousse services are the economical local option for short inter-village trips. They wait to fill and can be slower than private taxis but are an inexpensive way to reach Koungou areas.
- Local buses (a few €) - Mayotte’s scheduled buses run on several main corridors but coverage is limited compared with taxis. Use buses if the timetable matches your plan; frequency can be low outside peak times.
- Car rental (€30-€60/day) - Renting a car is a convenient way to explore Grande-Terre and reach Trévani on your own schedule. Roads on main routes are generally in good condition; smaller village roads may be narrow.
- Walking - Local village areas like Trévani are walkable for short trips to shops and beaches; walking is the best way to experience the village scale but use caution on uneven tracks.
Shopping in Trévani#
Shopping is limited to neighborhood shops and market stalls carrying daily essentials. For a wider range of goods, markets and stores in Mamoudzou are the place to go.
