Trangan
Island Remote Indonesian island in Maluku province with coral reefs
Island in Maluku province, eastern Indonesia; part of the region’s archipelago where travellers arrange inter‑island trips, visit local markets and stay in basic coastal accommodations.
Trangan is an island in the Aru Islands group of Maluku province in eastern Indonesia. It is one of the larger islands within the Aru archipelago and forms part of the region’s maritime landscape.
The island is characterised by lowland tropical forest, wetlands and coastal mangroves, with small traditional villages and subsistence activities rather than large-scale tourism infrastructure. The surrounding seas are noted locally for fisheries and marine biodiversity.
The Aru Islands have long been inhabited by Austronesian-speaking peoples and were part of regional trade networks during the pre-colonial and colonial eras; Trangan shares that regional history as a populated island in the archipelago.
Trangan lies in the Arafura Sea as part of the Aru Islands in Maluku province, eastern Indonesia, and is reached by boat from the district centre and regional transport hubs.
- Access via Dobo: The island group's main town, Dobo, is the usual transport hub for reaching the larger islands including Trangan by local boat services.
