About Kai Besar

Kai Besar (often rendered Great Kai) is one of the principal islands in the Kai Islands group of Maluku Province, Indonesia. The island supports coastal villages and local economies based on fishing, copra and smallholder agriculture.

The island’s coastline includes sandy beaches and fringing coral reefs, while interior areas are generally hilly and vegetated. Transport and supply connections are by inter-island boat services to nearby regional towns.

Kai Besar is located in southeastern Maluku, within Indonesia’s extensive island chains of the Banda Sea region, and forms part of the administrative island group commonly referred to as the Kai Islands.
