Aru Islands
Islands Indonesian island group with traditional Melanesian culture
The Aru Islands in eastern Indonesia are low, forested islands set in coral seas; travelers seek birdwatching, village visits and diving on reefs that remain largely unfettered by mass tourism.
The Aru Islands are an archipelago in Indonesia’s Maluku province located in the Arafura Sea. They comprise a large number of low-lying islands and are recognized for their mangrove systems, coastal wetlands, and traditional island communities.
The islands present a rural maritime landscape with small coastal settlements, traditional fisheries, and natural habitats that support diverse birdlife and marine resources. Access is typically by regional boat or limited air services, and infrastructure is modest compared with larger Indonesian islands.
The Aru Islands have long been inhabited by Austronesian and Papuan peoples and entered wider maritime trade networks in the premodern era. Colonial and modern periods brought changes in administration and economic activity but many communities retain traditional subsistence and craft practices.
Located in the Arafura Sea, the Aru group lies off the southwest coast of New Guinea and is administered as part of Maluku province in eastern Indonesia.
- Environment and geology: The Aru Islands are a scattered group of low-lying islands in eastern Indonesia, composed largely of coral and uplifted limestone with extensive mangroves and wetlands.
How to Get to Aru Islands #
The Aru Islands (Maluku province) are served from eastern Indonesia by air and sea. The main town is Dobo on the largest island; Dobo Airport (DOB) has scheduled flights from Ambon (AMQ). Alternatively, regular and charter boats operate between Ambon (and other Maluku ports) and Dobo.
Inter-island travel within the Aru group is by local motorboat; arrange onward connections locally in Dobo, which is the usual gateway for visitors and supplies.
Tips for Visiting Aru Islands #
- Arrange travel through Ambon to Dobo and confirm onward boat or small-plane schedules in advance-commercial connections are infrequent and changeable.
- Book accommodation and dive trips well ahead of time; infrastructure is limited and reliable options fill up during peak diving season.
- If you plan to dive or snorkel, coordinate with local operators who know the best reef sites and seasonal conditions-independent exploration in remote areas can be unsafe.
Best Time to Visit Aru Islands #
Visit the Aru Islands in the dry season (roughly May-October) for calmer seas, better diving/snorkeling conditions and more reliable inter-island travel.
