Tōshōdai-ji

Tōshōdai-ji is a Buddhist temple in Nara Prefecture founded in 759 by the Chinese monk Ganjin as the head temple of the Ritsu school. It is noted for retaining Nara-period architecture and ritual traditions.

The complex includes a large main hall that contains significant Buddhist images and is protected as a National Treasure. Visitors also find subsidiary halls, gates, and a museum that presents sculpture and ritual objects from the temple’s collections.

The temple was established by Ganjin after his arrival in Japan and served as a center for monastic discipline and ordination under the Ritsu school. Over the centuries the complex has been preserved and repaired while retaining core Nara-period elements.
