Main image

Tonto Natural Bridge is a natural travertine arch and the central feature of Tonto Natural Bridge State Park in central Arizona. The formation is commonly described as the largest natural travertine bridge in the world.

Walkways and trails lead to rim-level lookout points and down stairways into the wooded canyon to view the bridge from multiple angles; creek channels and small pools sit beneath the arch. Picnic areas and short interpretive paths are provided for visitors.

The bridge formed through the deposition of travertine from mineral-rich springs over long periods, creating a thick limestone-like deposit that left the arched opening when underlying material eroded. The site has been managed for public access and recreation in the 20th century and is protected as a state park.

The park and bridge lie in central Arizona in a canyoned, forested area near the town of Payson, within Gila County, set among high desert and ponderosa pine country.

  • Size note: Frequently described as the largest natural travertine bridge; the largest opening is commonly reported at roughly 180 feet in height.
  • Trail access: Trail sections include steep stairs and uneven stone paths to viewpoints at canyon rim and near the base, limiting full accessibility for some visitors.
