About Montezuma Castle National Monument#
Montezuma Castle National Monument preserves a well-known cliff dwelling near Camp Verde in central Arizona, first protected by the U.S. government in 1906. The structure is an impressive, multi-story example of Sinagua architecture from the region.
The dwelling was constructed by the Sinagua people between about 1100 and 1425 CE and was later abandoned. Recognizing its archaeological value, it was proclaimed a national monument in 1906 to protect the structure and surrounding landscape.
The monument sits above a tributary of the Verde River near the town of Camp Verde in central Arizona, on a limestone cliff overlooking the valley below.
- Visitor access: Visitors view the dwelling from a short paved trail and boardwalk; the cliff rooms are not open for public entry to protect the structure.
- Legal status: The national monument was proclaimed in 1906 and is one of the earliest sites protected under the U.S. Antiquities Act.

How to Get to Montezuma Castle National Monument#
Montezuma Castle National Monument is near Camp Verde in central Arizona, accessible by car from Interstate 17. From Phoenix, drive north on I‑17 toward Camp Verde and follow the signs to the monument off the local state routes around Camp Verde/Cottonwood; the site has a visitor parking area and a short paved path from the lot to the cliff‑dwelling overlook.
Tips for Visiting Montezuma Castle National Monument#
- Arrive early in the morning to avoid desert heat and to have the best chance of a quiet visit-the paved loop and viewing platform can fill up by mid-morning on weekends.
- Begin at the visitor center for the short, accessible interpretive trail and exhibits; the cliff dwellings are protected and all climbing or approaching the base of the cliffs is prohibited.
- Combine your stop with nearby Montezuma Well if you have time-the two National Park Service units are close together and offer contrasting ruins and natural features.
