Hiking and rock scrambling are the park’s primary activities, with a trail that leads toward the summit ridge and offers panoramic desert views. Trails include steep, exposed sections and are best attempted in cooler morning hours.

The peak is known locally for its association with a Civil War skirmish at Picacho Peak in 1862, which is commemorated by markers in the area. Park management combines recreation with protection of Sonoran Desert vegetation and wildlife.
