Tomb of Hafez

The Tomb of Hafez, commonly called Hafezieh, is the memorial site and garden surrounding the grave of the 14th-century Persian poet Hafez in Shiraz. The site is a landscaped garden with a domed pavilion erected over the poet’s tomb and is a major cultural landmark in the city.

Visitors come to pay respects, read and recite Hafez’s poetry and to see the pavilion and ornamented garden that frame the grave. The current pavilion and garden landscaping date largely from the 20th century and the site has been a focus of public literary commemoration since then.

Hafez (Khwaja Shams al-Din Muhammad Hafez-e Shirazi) lived in the 14th century; the grave site has been honoured and rebuilt at several points in history, with the present memorial designed to create a contemplative garden setting.

The tomb is located in Shiraz’s urban area and is easily reached from the city centre, forming part of the city’s network of cultural and historic sites.
