Tōdai-ji
Temple Massive Nara temple housing the Great Buddha
Tōdai‑ji in Nara contains the Daibutsu (Great Buddha) inside one of the largest wooden halls in the world; visitors also see free‑roaming deer in the surrounding park.
Tōdai-ji is a large Buddhist temple complex in Nara, best known for its Great Buddha Hall and the giant bronze Buddha statue it houses. The temple is a central monument of Nara and a major cultural landmark dating from the Nara period.
The most prominent feature is the Daibutsuden, which contains the roughly 15-metre-tall bronze Vairocana Buddha. The complex also includes the monumental Nandaimon gate with its guardian statues and several subsidiary halls on the hillside used for ceremonies and viewpoints. The temple stands within Nara Park and is closely associated with other historic monuments in the city.
Construction was ordered by Emperor Shōmu in the Nara period; work on the temple and its Buddha began in the 8th century with completion in the mid-700s. The great hall has been rebuilt several times over the centuries - the current structure dates from the early 18th century - while the site has retained its central religious and cultural role.
Tōdai-ji sits on the eastern edge of Nara Park in central Nara City, about 40 kilometres south of Kyoto and roughly 40 minutes by train from Kyoto. The temple grounds link directly into the park and are within walking distance of Nara Station and other historic sites.
- Deer in the park: Look for freely roaming deer in Nara Park surrounding the temple - they are considered sacred and accustomed to people.
- Visiting note: Peak visiting times are morning to early afternoon; combining the visit with other Nara Park sites reduces repeat travel time.
What to See #
- Daibutsuden (Great Buddha Hall): Large wooden hall that houses the bronze Vairocana Buddha statue approximately 15 metres tall; the current building dates to the early 18th century after several reconstructions.
- Nandaimon Gate: Massive wooden gate guarding the southern approach, with two large Nio guardian statues; the gate dates from the 12th to 13th centuries in style though the structure has later repairs.
- Nigatsu-dō and other subsidiary halls: Hilltop terrace and halls such as Nigatsu-dō used for ceremonies and known for wide views over Nara Park; Nigatsu-dō dates back to the Heian period.

Tips for Visiting Tōdai-ji #
- Arrive at opening (around 8:00-9:00) on a weekday and enter through the Nandaimon (Great Southern Gate) from Nara Park to see the Daibutsuden with far fewer people and better light for photos across the lawn.
- Don't rush past the main hall-visit Nigatsu-dō (the hillside hall) and the smaller temple buildings on the east side of the complex for quieter views over Nara that many day-trippers miss.
- Combine your visit with a short stroll through Nara Park before or after entering to experience tame deer away from the busiest temple approaches, and plan your route so you avoid the peak mid-morning arrival of bus tours.
