Tirta Empul

Tirta Empul is a Balinese Hindu water temple and pilgrimage site located in Tampaksiring, central Bali; it is centred on a sacred spring used for ritual purification. The complex is an active religious site and a significant place for Balinese spiritual practices.

The main attraction is the spring-fed bathing area with a series of stone spouts and pools where worshippers enter to perform ritual cleansing; many visitors also explore the temple courtyards, shrines and gardens. The site is a focal point for ceremonies as well as everyday offerings.

Historical records and local tradition date the temple’s construction to the 10th century during the Warmadewa period, though the site has undergone restorations and additions over the centuries. The spring and temple remain central to local religious life.

Tirta Empul is located in the Tampaksiring area of central Bali, northeast of Ubud and accessible by road from major Balinese towns.
