How to Get to Tinghir#
Tinghir (Tinerhir) is best reached by road from nearby regional airports (Errachidia, Ouarzazate) or by intercity bus from Marrakech and other Moroccan towns. There is no rail service; most visitors arrive by bus or private transfer and continue by taxi to surrounding gorges and kasbahs.
Errachidia Moulay Ali Cherif Airport (ERH): ERH is the closest airport with limited domestic flights. From Errachidia you can reach Tinghir by shared grand taxi or private taxi; journey time is roughly 1.5-2 hours by road. Approximate fares for a shared grand taxi are 80-150 MAD per person; a private transfer will be more.
Ouarzazate Airport (OZZ): Ouarzazate has more frequent connections (often via Marrakech) and is used by visitors heading to the Dades and Todra valleys. Road transfer to Tinghir takes about 2-3 hours; expect private-taxi transfers or arranged hotel shuttles rather than frequent scheduled services.
Train: Tinghir has no rail station. The closest major rail hub is Ouarzazate (connected indirectly) or the larger stations in Marrakech and Errachidia region; from those cities you continue by road.
Bus: CTM and regional bus operators run services linking Tinghir with Ouarzazate, Erfoud and Marrakech. Journey times vary (Marrakech-Tinghir ~5-7 hours depending on route and stops). Tickets on CTM and local operators are inexpensive (dozens to low hundreds of MAD); check CTM or local company timetables and buy tickets in advance during high season.
How to Get Around Tinghir#
Tinghir is primarily a road-travel destination - buses, shared taxis and private transfers are the realistic options. For independent travel a rental car or private transfer works best; for budget travel, CTM buses and grand taxis are reliable.
- Shared grand taxi (80-150 MAD) - Shared grand taxis are the common intercity mode in this region for short-to-medium hops. They leave when full and are inexpensive. They are the fastest budget option from nearby towns but can be cramped and leave on flexible schedules.
- Private taxi / transfer (300-700 MAD (approx.)) - Private taxis or hotel-arranged transfers offer door-to-door convenience-recommended if you have lots of luggage or arrive late. Expect a fixed fare and faster, more comfortable travel than shared taxis.
- CTM / regional bus (60-180 MAD) - CTM and local bus companies connect Tinghir with Marrakech, Ouarzazate and Erfoud. Buses are comfortable for Moroccan intercity travel and run on published timetables; book ahead in high season. Expect multiple stops en route.
- Rental car (350-700 MAD/day (varies)) - Hiring a car gives the most flexibility to explore Dades and Todra gorges and the desert roads. Roads are generally passable but can be narrow and winding; 4x4 is useful for remote side trips. Park and drive carefully in town centre.
- Local taxi (10-50 MAD) - Local petit taxis or town taxis serve short trips inside Tinghir and to nearby sights. Negotiate fares beforehand or use visible meters if available. They’re handy for short transfers from bus stations to riads.
- Walking - Tinghir’s centre and nearby markets are compact and walkable. Walking is the easiest way to explore the medina, kasbahs and local cafés; bring sun protection in summer.

Shopping in Tinghir#
Shopping in Tinghir is centered on small souk stalls and roadside shops. Look for locally woven Berber rugs and blankets, silver jewellery, dried fruits (dates and almonds) and basic pottery sold by vendors in the town and at market stalls. There aren’t large malls or many branded stores - expect to shop in small family-run shops and barter gently on price.
Nightlife in Tinghir#
Nightlife in Tinghir is low-key and focused on cafés, hotel terraces and tea houses where locals gather after dark. There are no clubs or large late-night venues; evenings are best enjoyed at a relaxed café or at your riad. If you want louder nightlife or live music you’ll need to travel to larger towns such as Ouarzazate or Erfoud.
