Tindari (ancient Tyndaris) is a coastal archaeological site and modern pilgrimage village on a promontory of northern Sicily. It combines visible Greek and Roman ruins with a later sanctuary that continues to attract visitors.

How to Get to Tindari #
Tindari sits on the north coast of Sicily above the small town of Patti. The nearest rail access is Patti station on the Palermo-Messina coastal line; from Patti you reach Tindari by a short local bus or taxi ride up the hill (a few kilometres). By car follow the coastal SS113 road and then the local turn-offs toward Tindari and the sanctuary; there is parking near the archaeological site and basilica.
Tips for Visiting Tindari #
- Visit early in the morning (or late afternoon) to enjoy the sanctuary and nearby archaeological site before the mid-day coach parties arrive and to get clearer views over the Marinello lagoon and Tyrrhenian Sea.
- Head first to the basilica area to see the famed Black Madonna and then walk the short path to the ruined Greek theatre and cliff-top viewpoints - many visitors rush past the smaller archaeological features to focus only on the main sanctuary.
- Avoid the busiest period by combining Tindari with a drive along the coast (rather than arriving on a packaged tour): parking and short walks from the village give access to quieter vantage points that most day-trippers miss.
Best Time to Visit Tindari #
Visit Tindari in late spring or early autumn for pleasant Mediterranean weather, good visibility over the sea and fewer crowds than midsummer.
