Axum
Building Ancient Ethiopian city famous for stelae and ruins
Axum in Ethiopia’s Tigray Region is an ancient capital known for its carved stelae, Christian churches and Axumite ruins; visitors see the Stelae Field, the Church of St. Mary of Zion, museums and local markets.
Axum is an ancient city in the Tigray Region of northern Ethiopia and the centre of the Aksumite civilization, notable as a major trading state in late antiquity and an early adopter of Christianity. It contains extensive archaeological remains and is inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The site’s most visible attractions are the carved stelae and obelisks in the Stelae Field, including very large monolithic examples; the best known obelisk measures about 24 metres. The area also includes ruined palaces, tombs, and an archaeological museum with Aksumite inscriptions and coins.
Aksum was the capital of the Aksumite kingdom, which flourished roughly from the 1st to the 7th centuries CE, and the kingdom adopted Christianity in the 4th century under King Ezana. Over time the political centre shifted and many monuments fell into ruin, but the site remained a religious and cultural focal point.
The town of Axum sits in the northern Ethiopian highlands in Tigray. The modern town lies adjacent to the archaeological zone and is an active pilgrimage destination for Ethiopian Orthodox Christians.
- Obelisk of Axum: The main standing obelisk commonly called the Obelisk of Axum measures about 24 metres and was restituted to Ethiopia from Italy in 2005.
- UNESCO status: Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980 for its testimony to the Aksumite civilization and its archaeological remains.
What to See #
- Stelae Field (obelisks): An open field of carved stone stelae and obelisks, some standing and others fallen; includes the site of the famous tall obelisk returned to Ethiopia in 2005 and visible examples up to about 24 metres in original height.
- Church of St Mary of Zion: A modern church complex that stands on the traditional site of the ancient cathedral, long associated with the claim that the Ark of the Covenant is kept nearby; site is an active destination for Ethiopian Orthodox pilgrims.
- Archaeological Museum: A small local museum that displays Aksumite artifacts including inscriptions, coins and carved objects recovered from nearby excavations.
- Dungur (palace ruins): Ruined palace and settlement remains often referred to as Dungur, consisting of mudbrick foundations and stone elements near the stelae field dating to the Aksumite period.
How to Get to Axum #
Axum is served by Axum Airport (AXU) with regular domestic flights from Addis Ababa (about 1.5 hours) and occasional regional connections. Overland options include long-distance buses and private transfers from Mekelle or Addis Ababa; roads can be slow and dusty outside the dry season. From central Axum the Stelae Field and museum are an easy taxi or tuk-tuk ride (or a 15-30 minute walk depending on where in town one is based).
Tips for Visiting Axum #
- See the obelisks early in the morning to avoid tour buses and harsh midday light-sunrise falls neatly along the rows of stelae.
- Hire a licensed local guide in Axum town; they can read inscriptions like the Ezana Stone and explain the layers from pagan Aksumite kings to Christian emperors.
- Dress conservatively when visiting Church of St Mary of Zion; photography inside is sensitive and often restricted by clergy.
- Bring cash in small denominations-many local vendors and tipping situations in Axum prefer birr.
