Tidra
Island Island off Mauritania's coast within Banc d'Arguin
Tidra Island lies off Mauritania’s Atlantic coast near Nouadhibou, part of a coastal fishing and birding area. Visitors arrive by boat for birdwatching, coastal scenery and to meet Imraguen fishing communities.
Tidra is a sand-dominated island off the Atlantic coast of Mauritania, part of the Banc d’Arguin archipelago in Dakhlet Nouadhibou region. It is one of the larger islands in the Banc d’Arguin area and lies within the marine and coastal protected zone.
The island features sandy shores, tidal flats and habitats used by migratory and resident seabirds and shorebirds. Traditional fishing by local Imraguen communities has long been associated with islands in this archipelago.
Tidra’s role has been primarily as a base for artisanal fishing and birdlife habitat rather than as an urban or industrial centre. Its human presence is limited and tied to seasonal or small-scale village life.
Geographically the island sits in the shallow coastal waters off Mauritania’s Atlantic coast within the Banc d’Arguin park; it lies west of the mainland and is one of the archipelago islands between Nouadhibou and the Bay of the Arguin.
- Protected area status: Located inside the Banc d'Arguin National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site noted for its importance to migratory birds.
