The Meadows is a large public park immediately south of Edinburgh’s Old Town, used as urban green space, recreation grounds and pedestrian routes. It offers wide, tree-lined avenues and extensive playing fields that support informal sports and leisure.

Paths through the park link residential areas to the university precinct and city centre, and the greens are commonly used for walking, running, team sports and occasional events. The site functions as one of Edinburgh’s principal inner-city parks and a daily amenity for local residents and students.

Historically the area was common land for the city before being landscaped and adapted for public use; it has evolved into a managed municipal park serving a central urban population. Management focuses on maintaining open lawns, trees and sports pitches while accommodating high visitor use.

The Meadows sits directly south of Edinburgh’s Old Town and north of the city’s residential southside, adjacent to University of Edinburgh buildings and within easy walking distance of the city centre. It is fully urban in setting and surrounded by streets and civic institutions.

From Edinburgh Waverley Station it is a 15-20 minute walk south through George Street and past the university, or a 10-15 minute walk from the Royal Mile. Several bus routes (Lothian Buses routes 14, 23 and 26) run along nearby surface streets; the closest tram stop is at West End (Princes Street) followed by a short walk.

• Use the East Meadows entrances (around Melville Drive) to avoid the steepest stairs and join the tree-lined central paths.
• Visit on a weekday morning for the best chance to see university students, chess players and the carved wooden benches without weekend dog-walking chaos.
• Look down: worn flagstones and polished curbstones around the play areas mark decades of boots and bicycle tyres - little local histories most guidebooks miss.
