The <I>Trulli</I> of Alberobello Historical Site

The Trulli of Alberobello are a concentration of traditional Apulian dry-stone dwellings with distinctive conical roofs located in the town of Alberobello in Apulia, southern Italy. The group is inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its vernacular stone-building technique.

The town center contains hundreds of these small, conical-roofed structures clustered along narrow streets. Two principal districts - Rione Monti and Aia Piccola - show the highest density of surviving trulli, and a few notable examples are set up as museums or shops. The individual trulli are typically single-room buildings with stone vaults and exterior whitewashed walls.

The trulli were built using local limestone and a dry-stone masonry technique without mortar; this method and the buildings’ form developed over several centuries as a local rural tradition. The compact historic town grew around these structures and many have been restored for conservation and tourism.

Alberobello sits in the Itria Valley in central Apulia, inland from the Adriatic coast. The town is in a rural agricultural landscape of low limestone hills and is accessible by road and regional rail from Bari and other nearby towns.

• Visiting tip: Best visited early morning or late afternoon to avoid the largest crowds and to see the stonework and painted roof symbols clearly.
• Access note: Many trulli are now shops, cafés or small museums, but some remain private homes - respect that some interiors are not open to the public.

What to See#

• Rione Monti: A cluster of traditional dry-stone houses with conical roofs concentrated in two historic districts, the main one on a hillside known for its high density of trulli.
• Aia Piccola: A quieter residential district preserving many original trulli in everyday use and narrow lanes dating to the town’s historic core.
• Trullo Sovrano: A two-storey trullo restored and open as a local museum showing interior layouts and construction techniques.

Alberobello is about 55 km southeast of Bari. From Bari, take the Ferrovie Sud-Est regional trains to Alberobello (approx. 1-1.5 hours) or drive southeast on SS16 and SP235. The town is compact and walkable once arrived.

• Walk the narrow streets early morning or after sunset when tour groups thin and light falls softer on the whitewashed cones.
• Visit the Trullo Sovrano (the only two-storey trullo) for an interior sense of how these houses were organised.
• Avoid the busiest central lanes at lunchtime; instead, head to the outskirts where authentic trulli still serve as homes.
