The Gedeo Cultural Landscape is an agriculturally shaped landscape in southern Ethiopia characterised by intensive, small-scale agroforestry dominated by enset (false banana) and coffee cultivation. The landscape reflects long-established land management practices by the Gedeo people that integrate food production with tree cover and household gardens.
The patchwork of farms, terraces and wooded boundaries provides both subsistence production and market crops, with a high density of small holdings across hilly terrain. The area attracts interest for its living cultural practices and the way farmland and forested elements are interwoven.
Local communities have maintained and adapted these systems across generations, sustaining continuous cultivation and farm management practices. Land use has changed only gradually, with the cultural landscape defined by ongoing agricultural traditions rather than a single historic construction phase.
