Ko Tao is a small island in the Gulf of Thailand, part of Surat Thani province, renowned internationally for scuba diving and snorkeling. The island’s sheltered bays, reefs and concentration of dive schools make it a major dive-training centre in Southeast Asia.

Historically a sparsely populated fishing island, Ko Tao developed as a tourist and dive destination from the late 20th century as international diving tourism expanded. Infrastructure has grown around dive training, guesthouses and transport links to the mainland.

The island sits in the Chumphon/Surat Thani archipelago in the Gulf of Thailand and is administered by Surat Thani province. It lies north of Koh Phangan and Koh Samui and is reached by regular ferries from the mainland and neighbouring islands.

  • Diving hub: The island is a global centre for scuba training and dive certification, with numerous dive schools and hundreds of nearby dive sites.
  • Compact, hilly island: The island has a steep, hilly interior with multiple viewpoints and compact bays, so many popular sites are reached on short boat rides or on foot from beach settlements.

What to See #

  • Sairee Beach: Sairee Beach, the island's longest sandy shoreline and main social hub for restaurants, bars and sunset viewpoints.
  • Mae Haad (pier and town): Mae Haad, the island's main pier and settlement area where ferries arrive and local services are centred.
  • Island viewpoints: Interior viewpoints such as John-Suwan viewpoint and others on the island's hilly interior that offer panoramic views over bays and nearby islets.

How to Get to Ko Tao #

Ko Tao is an island reached by ferry or high‑speed catamaran. Regular operators include Lomprayah (high‑speed catamaran) and other ferry companies running routes from Chumphon, Surat Thani (Don Sak) and via Koh Phangan/Koh Samui; crossings typically take between ~1.5 and 4 hours depending on origin and vessel. From the pier at Mae Haad you can walk into the main town area (a few minutes) or take a short taxi/tuk‑tuk to beaches and dive sites.

Tips for Visiting Ko Tao #

  • If diving or snorkeling, book the first morning boat trips to popular sites-early departures often mean calmer seas, better visibility and fewer other boats at the reefs.
  • Choose accommodation near Mae Haad/Sairee for the quickest access to ferries and dive shops; staying on the main west coast makes it easier to join trips and catch evening sunset viewpoints.
  • Reserve dive courses or popular snorkel excursions in advance during high season (November-April); many dive shops limit trainee numbers and fill up on short notice.
