How to Get to Tepoztlán#

Tepoztlán is a popular pueblo mágico south of Mexico City; most visitors arrive via Mexico City (MEX) and continue by bus or colectivo from Taxqueña or Cuernavaca. There is no direct rail service, so road connections are the normal route.

By Air

Mexico City International Airport (MEX): The main airport for reaching Tepoztlán is Mexico City’s Benito Juárez International Airport (MEX). From MEX, take a taxi or airport bus to southbound terminals (Terminal Taxqueña) and then an intercity bus toward Cuernavaca; total transfer time to Tepoztlán area is typically 1.5-2.5 hours depending on traffic and connections.

General Mariano Escobedo / Toluca / Cuernavaca airports: Toluca (TLC) and Cuernavaca (CVJ/General Mariano Matamoros, smaller domestic) have limited schedules; flying into or arriving at Cuernavaca airport shortens the onward road transfer to Tepoztlán significantly compared with Mexico City.

By Train & Bus

Train / Metro + Bus: There is no direct intercity train to Tepoztlán. From Mexico City, take the Metro/metrobus to Taxqueña (south bus terminal) and then catch a direct bus or colectivo towards Tepoztlán-buses depart frequently and the ride from Taxqueña is around 1.5-2 hours depending on traffic; fares are modest (a few dozen MXN).

Bus / Colectivo: Regular buses and colectivos run from both Mexico City (Taxqueña) and from Cuernavaca to Tepoztlán. From Cuernavaca the trip is about 30-45 minutes; from Mexico City expect 1.5-2+ hours in normal traffic. Colectivos can be faster but fill quickly.

How to Get Around Tepoztlán#

For Tepoztlán the quickest public option is bus/colectivo from Taxqueña or Cuernavaca; hire a taxi or private shuttle for direct service. Once in town, walking is the best way to navigate the central area and access the Tepozteco trail.

  • Intercity bus / Colectivo (~30-150 MXN) - Buses and colectivos from Taxqueña (Mexico City) and from Cuernavaca are the standard way to reach Tepoztlán. Buses depart frequently; colectivos are quicker when available but can fill early. Expect travel times of ~1.5-2 hours from Mexico City and ~30-45 minutes from Cuernavaca.
  • Taxi / Private transfer (~500-1,200 MXN (Mexico City → Tepoztlán, approximate)) - Taxis or private transfers (including app-based services to the outskirts) are convenient for door-to-door trips, especially with luggage or for early/late arrivals. Expect higher cost than buses but faster and more comfortable if you need direct service.
  • Shuttle services / Tour vans (Varies by operator) - Many hotels and tour operators in Tepoztlán run shuttle services from Mexico City or Cuernavaca - convenient for non-Spanish speakers and during festival periods. Pre-booking is recommended during high season and weekends.
  • Car / Rental (Depends on rental/fuel) - Driving from Mexico City or Cuernavaca gives you full flexibility to explore Tepozteco and surrounding valleys. Be prepared for heavy traffic entering/leaving the Valley of Tepoztlán on weekends and holidays; parking near the main plaza can be limited.
  • Local taxis / Tuk-tuk (site-specific) (~20-150 MXN) - Within Tepoztlán small taxis or moto-taxis operate for short hops up the hill or to trailheads. Negotiate fares in advance for short rides; useful for steep or uneven paths to some attractions.
  • Walking - Tepoztlán’s compact centre and market area are best explored on foot; many attractions (market, ex-convent, and the trailhead to Tepozteco) require walking on steep, cobbled or dirt paths. Comfortable shoes recommended.
