Teopantecuanitlan Archaeological Site

Teopantecuanitlan is a Formative-period archaeological site in Guerrero, Mexico, featuring early monumental masonry and carved stonework. It is recognized for its distinctive megalithic constructions and complex ceremonial architecture.

Principal highlights include a large sunken plaza and substantial platform constructions built of riverstone masonry, accompanied by carved megaliths with anthropomorphic and animal motifs. These features indicate organized labor and ceremonial use during the region’s formative centuries.

The site was occupied and developed during the Late Preclassic/Formative period and shows interregional connections with other early Mesoamerican cultures. Its architectural and sculptural production is often cited in discussions of early state formation in the region.
